Why Social Relationships Matter

Research consistently shows that strong social connections are linked to a range of positive health outcomes, including lower rates of chronic illness, improved mental health, and increased longevity. Social relationships provide emotional support, reduce stress, and encourage healthy behaviors, all of which contribute to better overall health. Upside Health Research Network is dedicated to bringing this crucial aspect of health to the forefront of public awareness and research.

Meet the Founder

Dr. Florence Lewis, PhD, LMFT, is the founder of the Upside Health Research Network, a nonprofit research institute dedicated to advancing health outcomes through the study of social relationships.

With years of experience as a mental health clinician embedded in healthcare systems, Dr. Lewis has worked alongside physicians, nurses, and care teams to support the emotional and relational well-being of patients. Her clinical insight and academic rigor fuel her mission to bridge the gap between research and practice. As a published author and sought-after speaker on health equity, relational health, and culturally responsive care, Dr. Lewis leads Upside’s efforts to equip healthcare providers with tools—many powered by tech tools like AI—to measure and apply relational health data in real-world settings.

We are proud to work together to advance the research and understanding of how social relationships can lead to healthier, happier lives.
